We can't thank enough Society Hill Dance Academy to make our dream first Dance come true. But really, Thank you so much Catherine Austin for dealing with us so well and pushing your own limits to make a choregraphy in our Roller skates. You will see us again for sure, just without skates this time.
Best, Deb and Meryl
So much fun!! My husband and I took private lessons with Shana for several months leading up to our wedding! We had so much fun learning our wedding dance. Shana is very experienced and really helped us understand dancing fundamentals. She encouraged us to come to group dance nights so we could learn other dances (and impress our friends!). Before the wedding, she had us dance at a showcase in front of several strangers -- it definitely helps calm our nerves for the big day! Our dance was perfect and we'll be forever grateful for Shana's help and patience! :)

Society Hill Dance Academy has worked with thousands of wedding couples since we opened in 2002. Helping you prepare for your first dance is our specialty and our instructors know what it takes to get you ready for that first dance, regardless of your timeline or budget. Our goal is to make you look and feel comfortable on the dance floor whether you want to put on a show or have an intimate dance together. An added bonus is that learning to dance together is an activity that you and your spouse will enjoy for the rest of your lives.
As soon as possible! We recommend getting started at least 6 months before your wedding.
Most of our couples take between 15-25 lessons to prepare for their first dance, but we customize a program to your particular situation. That is why we offer your first lesson for free so that we can assess your level, needs and programming opportunities that we offer.
Don’t panic. It has happened often and we can develop an approach and program to make the best of the situation while teaching/training you on a condensed program.
Isn’t time to put dance lessons on your to do list for the wedding. After all, flowers will not last long after your special day, but learning to dance as a couple will bring you a lifetime of happiness.

Every couple that comes in has different visions, abilities and available time. It is difficult to say how many lessons or how much time we need to help you reach your goals without working with you first, which is why we offer an introductory lesson. We are able to work with all budgets. The more time that you give us, the better the results will be.
No song? No problem. It is ok if you do not have a song chosen. Many wedding couples do not when they come in for their first lesson. Your instructor will help you choose a dance first, based on your vision and music preference, and then we will help you find the perfect song for your first dance!
Our team of professional instructors will help you develop the confidence and skills that you need to wow your guests and make your first dance as a married couple a memory to last a lifetime.
Society Hill Dance is the perfect place to host your bachelorette party or wedding. Our studio overlooks the trendy East Passyunk Avenue and has an event sound system with 2 large beautiful hardwood floors. We also provide lessons for Father Daughter dances.
Think about it. You are hosting a formal event, with a beautiful dance floor, you are hiring a band or DJ, and ALL eyes will be on you as you take the floor for your first dance. How would you like to be remembered? Your first dance should be romantic and memorable (and not because you stepped on each other’s toes). You want to feel comfortable on the floor and hopefully have fun too! There is no magic potion to make you look and feel natural. It takes time learning and practicing the steps together.

As a professional in the wedding industry, I have had the opportunity to work with countless wedding couples over the last 25 years. Working with them daily, one-on-one, in the months leading up to their wedding and after their big day, I’ve had the opportunity to hear some amazing, and some not-so-amazing stories. These are the 5 regrets that I hear most often.
It’s your day, don’t let the input from others cast a shadow on the wedding of your dreams. Of course, take the experience of professionals into account; there is usually a reason for the advice that they give. For example, when I’m choreographing a first dance, I usually recommend cutting your song down to two or two and half minutes. Most couples want to use their entire four minute song, however when you are on the dance floor, four minutes feels like an eternity not only for you, but also for your guests. It’s better to leave them wanting more than waiting for it to end.
Remember, your dress has more to do on your wedding day than just look pretty. Can you move comfortably? Can you raise your arms without a mishap? Can you sit down? Remember that your wedding is a celebration; you will be bending down to pick up a niece or nephew, out on the dance floor and sitting down for dinner. Be sure to try all of these movements before making your final dress selection.
This is a common regret that I hear so often from my couples. It may be years later, but you’re going to want to relive these moments; the ceremony, your first dance and especially a memorable father-daughter dance. These moments are priceless and it is worth the extra expense to have a professional capture them forever.
I have had brides tell me that they don’t even remember walking down the aisle, trying the hors d’evours, or seeing family members at the reception. Practice may not make perfect, but it definitely takes the stress out. Take the time to practice your first dance early so that it can still be enjoyable. This regret is one that I usually hear from the grooms. “We are so glad that we took lessons and practiced. It was one of the few moments of our wedding that I can actually remember truly enjoying.”
It all leads up to one moment, then hurray, you’re married. Now what? Real life gets hectic. My advice? Take something beyond the wedding. I have had couples that revisit their destination wedding spot on vacation to relive the joy of being together. Some couples go back to the spot that they first got engaged to think back on the years. One of the more successful methods that I’ve seen over the years is couples who simply continue dancing beyond their first lessons. Couples that started their lessons early tend to truly enjoy the time together and often continue dancing long past their wedding day. It’s worth making the time for a standing date night.
At the end of the day there are truly three moments at your wedding where everything stops and all eyes are on you. The ceremony, your first dance as a married couple, and the father-daughter dance. Two of these are my specialty. If you take nothing else from this blog, trust me on this. Start your lessons early, at least 6 months before your wedding. Too many couples wait until the last minute and then come to me in a panic two weeks before the big day. You are going to have 2-300 pairs of eyes on you when your special song starts to play, you will want to be prepared.
